Stories from the Quest

Organisations
“I had the pleasure of working with Tim from Access Quest to help us map out the accessibility of our City Campus at Wintec. Allowing students and visitors to have access to the most accessible route and relevant amenities is such a great resource to have!

I can truly see that this app is going to be useful in so many different ways, including identifying some blind spots for organisations where opportunities are highlighted to create better accessibility for all. A great investment indeed.”
Waikato Institute of Technology
Carina Fraser, Accessibility Manager
“We used Access Quest to undertake a basic accessibility audit of public bus stops in the city. The team were nothing but professional and thorough in their audit.

The results of the audit have motivated our organisation to begin to improve all bus stops so they are accessible for all users of public transport to enjoy.”
Rotorua Lakes Council
Rachel Doelman, Transport Facilities Lead
“Tim Young and the Access Quest team provided digital audit services for key areas of the City of Hobart in 2022/23, to enable us to upgrade our outdated Accessibility Map.

The team captured data and imagery on an extensive range of features and accessible services that provides insights to a wide range of Council areas including e-scooters, urban planning and mobility. The final Smart Access data collection report has given us a road map moving forward to improving accessibility in our city. "

"I recently visited the Sea Viewpoint at Cape Reinga and went down to the lighthouse via the walking track. Unbeknown to me, there are approximately eight stainless steel bollards installed across the entrance to the track, with gaps that are too narrow to allow access for a wheelchair (manual or electric), mobility scooter, or even a stroller. Maybe this is for safety reasons, as Access Quest Navigation showed me there is quite a steep incline all the way down and back up.

Before my visit, I used Access Quest Navigation and saw a sign with a number to phone ahead to remove the bollards. I spoke to someone personally, and they advised me that they would remove the bollards for me. On arrival, two bollards had indeed been removed, and a staff member was waiting in the carpark to put them back once we returned. Without the Access Quest App, the pathway would not have been usable and I would not have been able to view the lighthouse at all."
Daniel Padget
“Uneven footpaths are a nightmare! It was bad enough with a dodgy hip as the slope or unevenness can cause jarring of the socket and limit distances people can walk, (I’ve had my hip replaced so I’m way more able to cope). At present though the uneven surfaces are messing with balance issues, if you have to watch where you’re putting your feet you’re less able to watch out for other footpath challenges, like people walking pets, scooters, other pedestrians.”

As a young and new mother, an accessible and inclusive community is the best thing. When trying to navigate through motherhood, having a community that’s accessible makes it easier for new mums to enjoy being out of their houses, and not stuck inside.
Beth Wong
"Speaking from experience; having a mothers room is so handy while I was out of the house. Knowing where these places are has made trips out with my baby so much easier.

If I'm pushing her in the pram I do not want to be struggling to get up hills or in a place with no elevators. So having a community that is accessible makes it easier for new mums and dads to enjoy being out in the community and feel a sense of ease."
Violet Hayes
“In Wellington, Access Quest helped us identify 37 unsafe footpaths — they’re now on the council’s upgrade list.”
Wellington City Council

“Thanks to Access Quest, we mapped safe walking routes for children getting to school.”
– Sydney Parents’ Group

“My morning walk feels meaningful now. I know I’m helping others in my community.”
– Sarah, Auckland
